The study, led by researchers at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, found that certain immune cells can still fight cancer even when th e cancer cells lack an important protein that the immune system relies on to help track down cancer cells. This protein, called B2M, is found on the surface of most cells in the body. When cancer cells lose B2M, they become less visible to the immune system, making it more difficult for the immune system to attack them. The UCLA researchers found that the absence of B2M seems to activate an alternative immune response involving natural killer (NK) cells and CD4+ T cells.
